The Corfu Trail in 12 days

Day 1. Arrival in Corfu. Meet & Greet by the local representative. Transfer to your hotel in the the South of the island. Here you might want to rest and spend the day on the beach. Optional: loopwalk to the southernmost point Cape Arkoudillas, Arkoudillas Monastery ruins, Spartera and back to Asprokavos. Approx. 3,5 hrs. Bed & B in Asprokavos.

Day 2. Asprokavos - Santa Barbara. (6 - 7 hours walk) Today's part of the Corfu Trail leads along shady olive grove tracks and through open country to Lefkimmi, the 2nd largest settlement on the island, where you can stop at the picturesque riverside for refreshments in one of the tavernas. The Trail than descends and continues to Gardeno Valley, through dense olive groves. After a short climb up to the ridge you'll be rewarded by panoramic views of the coastline as well as Lake Korission. The days walk ends by following the coastal path down to the beach at Santa Barbara. B&B in Santa Barbara - Marathias.

Korfu

Day 3: Santa Barbara - Paramonas (5 - 6 hours walk) A day of almost level walking during which you follow the beach, passing  Agios Gordis and the Bond film "For Your Eyes Only" beach. The route leads on through sand dunes covered with a forest of juniper and cedar trees. After crossing the footbridge, you reach Lake Korission, famous because of it's large variety of wild birds. From here the Trail continues to Paramonas. The seaside tavernas are the perfect spot to relax! B & B in Paramonas.

Day 4: Paramonas-Stavros-Benitses (5,5 - 6 hours walk). Today the Corfu Trail crosses the island from west to east! A sharp climb early in the walk will bring you to the other side of the ridge and the inland villages Ano and Kato Pavliana. Along footpaths and tracks the route continues down through Vouniatades, crossing the Messongi River Valley and meandering through olive groves. After passing through Strongili, continue uphill along an old cobbled way to reach Komatiana and further to the east coast of the island, the small village of Benitses. B&B in Benitses.

Pagi

Day 5. Benitses - Pelekas (6 hours walking). Transfer to Stavros. A delightful footpath skirts Agii Deka mountain, leading to Ano Garouna, from where the route makes a very sharp ascent to the summit of Agii Deka (Ten Saints 576m.) The Trail follows a cobbled mule path down to the village of Agii Deka and further along tracks and minor roads to Sinarades. In this almost "open-air-museum" village you can visit the Folk Museum (limited opening hours!) From Sinarades village it goes to Aerostato and along several undulating tracks with great views over the west coast and inland the route ends in Pelekas.

Day 6. Pelekas - Liapades. (6,5 - 7 hours walking). A downhill walk takes you to Mirtiotissa beach, mainly used by nudists. Continue uphill and pass the Monastery, the village of Vatos and the Ropa River bank, bordered by pasture and willow trees, ascending into olive blanketed hills to the ancient village of Liapades. Day 7. Liapades to Agios Georgios. (5 hours walking) The route starts with a difficult footpath leading to Paleokastritsa. crossing the main resort road going back into the hills again along a network of lovely cobbled footpaths.

Pandokrator

A climb takes you to Lakones, view point Bella Vista and furtheron to Krini (Angelokastro - off route). The Trail than follows one of Greece's most remarkable footpaths 'The Roman Path' which cuts along a cliff. Another olive grove track descents to Agios Georgios-Pagi, with a beautiful long beach. Day 8. Agios Georgios-Rekini. (4.5 hours walking  600m ascent ) A sharp climb from Agios Georgios to the village of Prinilas starts today's walk. A descend brings you in the picturesque village of Pagi. Alongside the Megapotamos River, over the ridge through Aspiotades, Agros and Agios Athanasios Convent, to the road junction at Rekini. From here you can take the local bus (or a taxi, not included) to the north-east coast. B&B in Roda.

Day 9. Rekini-Spartillas & Barbati. (4.5 hours walking 550m ascent). Return by bus or taxi (not included) to Rekini. From here an unmade road leads to Valanio, Along  narrow tracks and a cobbled path, the Trail continues to Sokraki. The village square is the perfect place for a stop and refreshment. You might want to try a "ginger beer", a soft drink made in the neighbouring village of Kalafationes. From here the Trail continues along tracks and paths through forest and cultivated land to Spartillas. You continue to the coastal resort of Barbati where you spend the night. B&B in Barbati.

Ag. Spyridon

Day 10. Spartillas to Ag. Spiridon. (7 hrs walking)  You start with a transfer to Spartillas, where the Trail continues on a steep mountain footpath. A 45 minute climb brings you to Taxiarchis Chapel; a ruin with fresco-covered walls and splendid viewpoint. Continuing along the footpath, the Trail passes through a "tunnel" of oak trees, ascends to cross the "Karst Plateau", Corfu's wildest scenery, under the summit of Mount Pantokrator, the island's highest peak (917m). Descending now on a mountain/ track with fine views, you reach the high col of the mountain ridge, where both the northern and southern sections of  Corfu are visible. You then descend to the semi-ruined Byzantine village Paleo Peritha, located in a high valley. Onwards, the Trail descends a narrow valley on a rough mule track and continues further down on paths and tracks to the coastal plain. You reach the sea at Almiros and follow the beach to the wild bare headland which is Corfu's northernmost point.  From here a rough path along a low cliff will bring you to the beach of Agios Spiridon.

Here you can enjoy a swim and/or a meal or refreshments. At the time that suits you best, you go by bus or taxi (not included) down to your accommodation a studio with kitchen facilities (room only) on the north east coast, Kalami/Kassiopi area.

Day 11. The north east coast and mountain/ flanks. This is an almost circular walk, exploring the North east of the island. You quickly climb into the hills and then onto the high mountain flanks, through Porta and on to part-ruined Mengoulas. Then your descent begins, with wonderful sea views, through Katavolos and down to the sea at Kaminaki and return  to your studio (Kalami/Kassiopi area) room only. 

Optional at extra cost: Afternoon transfer to Corfu town UNESCO Heritage Site). Discover this lovely city by town walk, visit fortresses and musea or just relax on one of the town beaches or terraces! Bed and breakfast in Corfu town.

Day 12. Transfer to the airport
